1845 Silver dollar that needs to be GRADED?
I have an 1845 USA Silver Dollar Coin in a Plastic Case that is almost uncirculated, and may even be MS 60, but before any dealer will buy it from me, they ask me to have it "graded" by one of the major services. None of them are located anywhere me in northwest Ohio, so I am wondering if there is any valid grading service anywhere in NW Ohio that can do this for me so I can find out the coin's true condition and value.
The three major third party grading services are NGC, PCGS and ANACS. All others should be considered second tier operations. Each has a web presence where you can get information on what their submission requirements are and the cost associated with submitting some coins.
Your Seated Liberty dollar would retail for around $1800 and a dealer might offer you $1300 or $1400 for the coin in AU condition. It could be for a lot more depending on whether it is AU50 or AU58. In any case it would be well worth the cost to get it graded.
Perhaps you could have a written agreement with the dealer you trust most that he will pay you 65% of the retail value as listed in the most recent Grey Sheet less the cost of the submission if he will do the submission for you. Most dealers are used to the submission process and this should not present a real problem for them. If they do not know what the Grey Sheet is or have never submitted coins for grading walk quickly away and find someone else. If you are having trouble getting comfortable with a dealer you could to the American Numismatic Association web site (money.org) and do a search for member dealers near you. ANA member dealers have a code of ethics they are supposed to follow which should give you some assurances.
